Lyoto Machida’s Brother Hoping to Join Him in UFC
The UFC has had several brothers compete for the promotion to date , and of course, it recently signed Sergio Pettis to join lightweight champion Anthony. Well, if a Brazilian featherweight is able to reach his goal, then UFC fans may have to preface the name Machida with Chinzo. Yes, that’s the brother of former light-heavyweight champ, Lyoto Machida.
After spending over three years on the sidelines–he broke his hand badly in 2010–Chinzo Machida will return to the cage at a Resurrection Fighting Alliance card on November 22nd. In a recent interview with MMA Fighting.com, Machida (1-2) relayed that although he has some work to do, he hopes to battle his way to the Octagon.
“The UFC is the biggest promotion in the world, that’s where the best fighters are, but I’ll have to show what I can do to get there,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m Lyoto’s brother, he did his career and I’m doing mine. I’ll have to win fights to get in the UFC, and that’s why I’m training and fighting for.”
Like Lyoto, Chinzo knows a thing or two about Karate, as the latter is apparently a 12 time national champ. That’s quite the resume. As far as his upcoming return, Machida will fight Justin Houghton, who’s gone 4-2 thus far.
“I’ve seen [Houghton's] fights already,” Machida said about his next opponent. “He’s a Muay Thai fighter, likes to stand and fight, but I couldn’t see how his ground game is. It’s an MMA fight. Maybe I’ll have the opportunity to take him down, and I don’t see any problems with that — but I want to fight him standing.”
It will be interesting to see if Machida can put together a run, especially when you consider his martial arts background and training partners.
