This next post in our Hypopresive Exercise Technique series talks about the requirements for an exercise to be considered hypopresive.

It is important to understand that just adding a diaphragmatic aspiration is not enough to make an exercise hypopresive, and exercises must meet these three criteria:

  1. Decrease pressure within the thoracic, abdominal, and perineal cavities, as measured by a pressure gauge
  2. Create reflex EMG activity in the core muscles (abdominal wall and pelvic floor), as measured by deep EMG
  3. Cause neuro-vegetative reactivity via an increase in noradrenaline, as verified by heart rate variability

These requirements make it easier to clarify the difference between Hypopresive exercises and other exercises that may seem similar but do not meet all three criteria. For example, Uddiyana bandha from yoga may look similar to the Hypopresive technique; however, this exercise activates the parasympathetic system instead of the sympathetic, and increases secretions of acetylcholine, as opposed to noradrenaline.

Stay tuned for the next post, which will explore the shape of the pelvic floor and its association with the Hypopresive Method.
