Caroline Kennedy calls on women, young to rally for President Obama
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Caroline Kennedy, joining a parade of others in her famed political family, addressed the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night and reaffirmed the influential endorsement she gave Barack Obama four years ago.
?Back then, I was inspired by the promise of Barack Obama?s presidency,? she said. ?Today, I?m inspired by his record.?
Citing issues of ?social justice? and ?economic fairness,? she said Obama had lived up to the ideals of her father ? President John F. Kennedy ? and her uncles, the late senators Edward M. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.
Referencing her gender and her Catholic faith, she said Obama deserved to be reelected.
?When it comes to what?s best for women, there is only one candidate in this race who is on our side: Barack Obama,? she said. ?As a Catholic woman, I take reproductive health seriously, and today, it is under attack.
Kennedy also made a direct appeal to young voters, a group whose energy was crucial to Obama?s 2008 coalition.
?Let me say to the young ? and the young at heart ? Barack Obama is only president because you worked for him,? she said. ?Because you believed in him. Because you convinced your parents to vote for him. ? If you show the same spirit in this election as you did in the last, I know that we?ll make history again.?
