Tropical Storm Debby brings rain to parts of Florida
Tropical Storm Debby is nearly stationary over the central Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Tropical Storm Debby is centered at latitude 26.1 north and longitude 87.5 west, about 220 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and minimum central pressure of 1,000 millibars or 29.53 inches.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Louisiana coast from the Pearl River west to Morgan City, not including New Orleans or Lake Pontchartrain.
Tropical Storm Debby is not expected to move much tonight. A slow northward motion is forecast to begin by Sunday morning, followed by a gradual westward turn by Sunday night or Monday morning. The center of Tropical Storm Debby will be moving over the northern Gulf of Mexico during the next few days.
The strongest winds of Tropical Storm Debby are occurring well east of the center of circulation. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.
Tropical storm-force winds extend up to 175 miles from the center, mainly to the northeast and east.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the Louisiana coast by Sunday night. Tropical Storm Debby is expected to produce rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches along the Gulf coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, with possible isolated maximum amounts of 10 inches.
