Daily News baseball all-stars
Andrew Velazquez is the Daily News player of the year for the CHSAA/Private league all-star team.
Before the summer fun officially begins, it's time for the Daily News to announce its list of the best baseball players in the city. And since this is a city that is known for its baseball - from the Big Leagues to Little League teams throughout each of the five boroughs - this group will forever be known as the best of the best - and Daily News All-Stars.
PSAL Player of the Year:
Ernesto Lopez, 3B/C, Grand Street: Is it possible to have a triple-crown winner that flies under the radar? If so, Lopez is it. The Grand Street third basemen and catcher led all A-Division leagues in home runs (5), RBIs (26) and batting average (.610) during the regular season. If that weren?t enough for player of the year consideration, Lopez smacked a home run over the left field wall at MCU Park for what proved to be the winning run in the city championship game.
PSAL Position players:?
Danarius Baez, SS, South Bronx: He may be in the B division, but Baez carried his team to the championship with a .904 slugging percentage and five home runs in the regular season. ?He could beat anybody, A or B,? said one A Division coach.
Jose Cuas, SS, Grand Street: Any shortstop with a .422 batting average, a .509 on-base percentage and a .644 slugging percentage is automatically one of the best players in any league. Cuas is no different, leading the Wolves to the championship they?ve been looking for.
Kenneth Guichardo, C, Norman Thomas: The offense that Guichardo provides at the catcher position for Norman Thomas was fantastic. The cleanup hitter powered the Tigers to a No. 5 seed and a quarterfinal berth.
Phillie Guzman, IF, JFK: While hitting at a clip close to .600 for the regular season, Guzman?s slugging percentage was an off-the-charts 1.122. Numbers like that only come after terrorizing the opposition with power.
Kevin Martir, C/3B, Grand Street: He wasn?t quite as great at the plate as he?d hoped, but Martir still put in what us mere mortals is an excellent season. He adds excellent defense behind the plate, so it?ll be no surprise to see him succeed at Maryland.
Inoel Nunez, 1B, Monroe: Nunez stepped up to be Monroe?s most productive hitter after Ricardo Parra was forced to miss time due to injury. Nunez strung together a .583 on base percentage for the Eagles.
Nelson Rodriguez, C, George Washington: The Cleveland draft pick slugged .840 in the PSAL this year ? meaning he nearly averaged a base per at bat ? which is particularly incredible given that he catches for GW and has a killer arm.
