BURLEY | HerCanberra

Canberra has a new addition to its flourishing arts scene in the form of Burley, a creative writing journal with a focus on publishing local authors.

The editors, Cara Foster and Patrick Mullins, founded Burley in order to give local writers an opportunity to reach new readers and to showcase the best of Canberra writing to new audiences.

?There are so many talented established and emerging writers in Canberra?, says Cara.

?Speaking to some of the writers we know, we realised that there was a gap in the market for a local publication that support poets, essayists and short story writers of all ages and backgrounds.?

?This kind of local journal is particularly important for emerging writers who are at the start of their career and looking for the chance to work with an editor and build their portfolio of published work.?

Burley is publishing three issues in 2012, supported by the ACT Government. Submissions for Burley Issue Two are open now, with poetry, short stories and non-fiction on any theme welcome. Submissions to Issue Two close 1 July 2012.

The first issue was launched in May at Smith?s Alternative Bookshop, with some of the 21 local writers featured in the publication reading their work to a full house. The first issue features a diverse range of local writers, including many who have not previously been published.

You can find out more about Burley, including submission guidelines, on the website, www.burleyjournal.com.
