CONFIRMED: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Coming May 16th, 2014

Earlier today, Latino Review revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel's other 2014 movie. Variety has now confirmed this rumour (adding further credibility to the initial claims) and says that the studio are indeed planning to release it on May 16th, 2014. They mention that their reason for travelling back in time from the 31st Century is to, "help to battle the Badoon, an evil alien race that attempts to conquer Earth's solar system." However, it is not made clear whether or not this is the exact direction in which the film will go, although it matches up with what we heard earlier today. Apparently, Marvel are very happy with the script written by Nicole Perlman, a relative unknown who came out of Disney's screenwriting program. Their sources also tell them that the studio has prioritized this over Black Panther, although Marvel Studios is also said to be working on Ant-Man, Dr. Strange and The Inhumans (as well as The Avengers 2 in 2015).

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter also claims to have heard from reliable sources that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and reveal that, "Those in the know say the project is in line with Avengers in tone in the sense there is plenty of comedic elements on display." Nicole Perlman has written two drafts of the screenplay (she also impressed Marvel with a Black Widow solo script) and worked on Thor. Marvel is said to be on the hunt for a director.

Where states stand on implementing health care law

Here is a look at where each of the 50 states stand on implementing President Barack Obama's federal health care overhaul, which the Supreme Court ruled Thursday can go forward with its aim of covering more than 30 million uninsured Americans.

___

ALABAMA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 720,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 15.4 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Gov. Robert Bentley, a physician, created a commission in 2011 to recommend a plan for a health insurance exchange, but he successfully opposed efforts by some legislators to enact one in May. Critics said the bill would have limited the exchange to companies operating statewide, which is one at this point. Bentley said it was premature to act before the Supreme Court ruled.

___

ALASKA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 125,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 18 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Alaska, which is among the states that sued over the constitutionality of the federal health care law, has yet to implement a health care exchange. The health department has hired a consultant to help design one, and that report is expected soon.

___

ARIZONA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1.28 million state residents not covered, or about 19 percent

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Arizona is among the states challenging the constitutionality of the health care overhaul. The lawsuit covers about 22,000 people statewide, including some 14,000 people in the Phoenix area. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer's administration is moving to implement part of the contested law by reviewing health insurance rates to see if they should be labeled unjustifiably high. The state also has accepted a federal grant to create a state health insurance exchange.

___

ARKANSAS

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 539,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 19 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Arkansas decided on a federal-state partnership for its health insurance marketplace. Legislators blocked a bill by which the state would have created its own insurance exchange but have since accepted a grant that will allow it to at least have a role in the federally created exchange.

___

CALIFORNIA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 7,209,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 19 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: California has worked to be a model for the health care law and has begun implementing parts of it already, including creating the beginnings of health care exchanges to provide consumers a marketplace to purchase insurance policies starting in 2014. The state has also already banned insurers from refusing coverage for children with pre-existing illnesses and young adults are allowed to stay on their parents' plans through age 26 in California.

___

COLORADO

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 656,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 13 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Colorado lawmakers passed legislation in 2011 to set up health insurance exchanges, and a commission is in the process of implementing them. The exchanges are set to start October 2013.

___

CONNECTICUT

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: About 377,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 11 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Connecticut has hired staff and a board of directors to begin implementing health care exchanges and have them in place by the 2014 deadline set by the federal law. The state already is allowing people under 26 years old to stay on their parents' health insurance policies, which is part of the federal law.

___

DELAWARE

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: Between 100,000 and 110,000 Delaware residents are uninsured, about 11 percent of the state's population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Delaware officials are working on a health care exchange. State officials also are accepting public input as they come up with minimum coverage requirements that must be included in health care plans for individuals and small businesses.

___

FLORIDA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 3.85 million Floridians are uninsured, or about 21 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Gov. Rick Scott ordered the state not to accept federal money for implementing the health care law after he took office last year. Florida has rejected or declined to pursue more than $106 million and has returned $4.5 million. The state has its own health insurance exchanges, mainly for small businesses but without an individual mandate. The state has not implemented an exchange that would meet the requirements of the federal law.

___

GEORGIA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 111,000 state residents are uninsured, or 19 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Georgia has done nothing to implement a health care exchange. Lawmakers have introduced bills that would either allow or hinder implementation of the law, though none have passed.

___

HAWAII

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 97,000 state residents are uninsured, or 7.7 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Hawaii has been moving at full speed in anticipation the overhaul will be upheld. It joined several states last year in filing a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the law. Gov. Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat, said at the time the law preserved the best elements of Hawaii's long-standing health care statutes. The state also used a $300,000 private grant to create a state job for a coordinator to implement the overhaul. Hawaii plans to develop its own insurance exchange, a key component of the federal overhaul.

___

IDAHO

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 294,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 19 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Idaho has not implemented health insurance exchanges, over objections from insurers including Blue Cross of Idaho. The GOP-controlled Idaho Legislature declined to accept federal grants for the project and also balked at putting together a scaled-down state-funded version while awaiting the Supreme Court's decision.

___

ILLINOIS

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1,914,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 15 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Illinois has received three federal grants to study and start building its health insurance exchange, but the Legislature has failed to pass a law establishing it. Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, has considered an executive order to do that, but now may pursue a federal-state partnership instead.

___

INDIANA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 850,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 13.4 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered state agencies to build a framework for a possible exchange, but he has not implemented one pending the Supreme Court ruling. Indiana also has pushed to use its health savings account to help cover an estimated 500,000 who will become eligible for Medicaid in 2014 under the federal health care overhaul, but federal officials denied the request in September, saying it was premature.

___

IOWA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 366,000 Iowa residents are uninsured, about 12 percent of the population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: The state does not have a law establishing a health insurance exchange, and Republican Gov. Terry Branstad has said Iowa will create a state-based exchange only if the law is upheld. The Republican House Majority leader says the state has already enacted several pieces of the law, including a website that helps residents find insurance, but the state has yet to comply with other requirements.

___

KANSAS

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 350,000 state residents are uninsured, or almost 13 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: The Republican-dominated state government has been hostile to the 2010 federal law and hasn't moved to set up a health care exchange. Last year, GOP Gov. Sam Brownback's administration returned a $31.5 million federal grant.

___

KENTUCKY

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 640,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 15 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Kentucky has laid the groundwork for a statewide health insurance exchange, but Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear opted to wait for the Supreme Court ruling before moving doing anything more.

___

LOUISIANA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 886,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 20 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Louisiana has not implemented health care exchanges, instead choosing to have the federal government create and operate them. Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal and Attorney General Buddy Caldwell oppose the health care law, and Louisiana is one of the states challenging it in court.

___

MAINE

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 121,000 state residents uninsured, or about 9.4 percent. The number may rise due to Medicaid cutbacks authorized by the latest state budget.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Maine had a task force to create a health care exchange, but legislation implementing one was set aside until after the Supreme Court's decision. Maine has passed laws implementing components of the law, such allowing parents to add coverage of children up to age 26 and outlawing denial of insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Maine has also passed a law that will allow consumers to shop out-of-state for coverage.

___

MARYLAND

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 747,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 13 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Maryland has passed legislation to create a health care exchange, setting up standards and regulations to run the program and creating the framework for a marketplace where individuals and small businesses can purchase coverage.

___

MASSACHUSETTS

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: Massachusetts says 120,000 people, or about 2 percent of the population, remained uninsured in 2010. The U.S. Census Bureau had a somewhat higher estimate of about 370,000 people, or more than 5 percent of the population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Massachusetts passed a sweeping health care law in 2006 that became the blueprint for the federal overhaul. Many of the key elements of the federal law, including the "individual mandate" requiring nearly everyone have insurance, remain the law in Massachusetts.

___

MICHIGAN

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1.27 million Michigan residents are uninsured, about 13 percent of the population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has been working to set up a health insurance exchange but has had limited success because House Republicans refuse to let it use $9.8 million in federal planning dollars. Because of looming federal deadlines to have an exchange in place, state officials are planning for a state-run exchange while also talking to federal officials about a possible partnership on a federal exchange where the state handles just some responsibilities, such as customer service.

___

MINNESOTA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 509,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 9.8 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Minnesota has embraced the health care overhaul more than many states. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton used a provision in the federal law to extend Medicaid coverage to more than 80,000 vulnerable adults as soon as he took office in 2011. His administration has focused on developing an online health insurance exchange envisioned as a key part of the law, securing $28.4 million from the federal government for Minnesota's planning efforts.

___

MISSISSIPPI

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 618,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 21 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, a Republican, has been working on a health care exchange and has accepted federal money for the project. The exchange originally was proposed by Republican Haley Barbour when he was governor.

___

MISSOURI

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 835,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 14 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Missouri received an initial planning grant but has not implemented a health insurance exchange because of opposition to it by some Republican state senators.

___

MONTANA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 176,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 18.1 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican lawmakers in Montana who controlled the Legislature rejected any efforts to establish a health insurance exchange.

___

NEBRASKA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 237,000 Nebraska residents are uninsured, about 13 percent of the population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: The state does not have a law establishing a health insurance exchange. However, Republican Gov. Dave Heineman has instructed the state Department of Insurance to plan for one in case the law is upheld.

___

NEVADA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 563,000, or about 21 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS NOW: The Nevada Legislature in 2011 passed a bill implementing the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange and creating a seven-member board to oversee it. Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval opposed the federal health care law as a candidate. He also allowed a private attorney appointed by former Gov. Jim Gibbons to continue representing Nevada in the lawsuit filed by more than two dozen states challenging the law. State officials estimate the Affordable Care Act would cost Nevada $575 million in the first five years as more people become eligible for Medicaid.

___

NEW HAMPSHIRE

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 134,000 state residents are uninsured, or just more than 10 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: New Hampshire currently has laws that echo portions of the Affordable Care Act, such as allowing dependent unmarried residents to remain on their parent's health care insurance until age 26. Last year, state legislators passed laws that said residents cannot be required to obtain health insurance or be fined for not being covered. They also established a state oversight committee that must give its OK before the federal law is implemented. Democratic Gov. John Lynch's office said it has done some work on implementing aspects of the Affordable Care Act, but has put plans on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court makes its ruling.

___

NEW JERSEY

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1.3 million, or about 15 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: The Legislature passed a law to set up a state health insurance exchange, but Republican Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the measure in May, saying he did not want to spend money on something that could be ruled unconstitutional.

___

NEW MEXICO

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 433,000, or about 21 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: New Mexico this week announced formation of a task force to develop a proposal for creating a state health insurance exchange. Republican Gov. Susana Martinez's administration is also working on an overhaul of Medicaid to try to slow the growth of the program without cutting enrollment or changing who's eligible to receive medical services. The state wants to have the revamped Medicaid program implemented in the fall of 2013.

___

NEW YORK

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 2,886,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 15 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order April 12 to establish a statewide health insurance exchange, where individuals and small businesses could tap up to $2.6 billion in federal tax credits and subsidies, planning to show by January that the state is ready to participate, start taking applications the following October and start operating Jan. 1, 2014.

___

NORTH CAROLINA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1.57 million state residents are uninsured, or about 17 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Legislation aimed at prohibiting the mandate for individuals to buy health insurance was the first item introduced after Republicans took over control of by North Carolina's General Assembly last year. Lawmakers haven't been able to overcome Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto of their bill. But work to design health care exchanges has stalled since last summer.

___

NORTH DAKOTA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 83,000 North Dakota residents, or about 13 percent, had no health insurance in 2010.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Legislators rejected a state-run health insurance exchange last year. Majority Republicans said it was too complex and too expensive and to do so would be tantamount to accepting the federal health care overhaul.

___

OHIO

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: More than 1.5 million state residents are uninsured, or about 14 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Ohio has not moved to create a health care exchange but is evaluating its options. It received a $1 million federal exchange planning grant in 2010. Republican Gov. John Kasich's administration has taken advantage of some parts of the new law to expand coordinated care and propose changes to Medicaid eligibility. Democrats have unsuccessfully pushed bills in the Legislature to set up a state-run exchange. But Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who is also Ohio's insurance director, frequently criticizes the overhaul and says it's premature to plan for an exchange without further clarification from the federal government.

___

OKLAHOMA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: About 624,480 Oklahomans are uninsured, or about 17 percent of the state's population.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS NOW: Oklahoma lawmakers first rejected $54 million in federal funding to create a health care exchange and then decided to take no action on developing an exchange, deciding instead to wait and see whether the law is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

___

OREGON

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 612,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 16 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Oregon is working aggressively to implement the health care law and is farther along than most other states. The federal government has committed more than $60 million in grants to develop a health insurance exchange that could be duplicated in other states.

___

PENNSYLVANIA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 1.37 million state residents are uninsured, or about 11 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, as state attorney general in 2010, joined a group of state officials in challenging the law. Still, Pennsylvania is working to set up a health insurance exchange required by the law, although the state Insurance Department says it is waiting for the Supreme Court's decision before it touches a $33 million grant it won in January to build out the exchange.

___

RHODE ISLAND

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 119,000 state residents are uninsured or about 11.4 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Rhode Island has received $58 million in federal funds to assist in the creation of its health benefits exchange. Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, last week picked a former state health official to direct the exchange.

___

SOUTH CAROLINA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 930,000 state residents are uninsured, or more than 20 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: South Carolina, which is among the states that sued over the constitutionality of the federal health care law, opted not to implement health care exchanges after a panel concluded there were too many unanswered questions.

___

SOUTH DAKOTA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: Federal officials estimate 105,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 13 percent; South Dakota officials say state survey data is lower, about 9 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard has delayed work on setting up a health insurance exchange until the Supreme Court's decision.

___

TENNESSEE

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: About 930,000 people, or 15 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Tennessee has laid the groundwork for a health insurance exchange but would have to wait until the Legislature returns in January to complete it.

___

TEXAS

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: About 6.2 million, or about 25 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Texas has not implemented a health care exchange. Texas has joined with other states in challenging the law in court. Gov. Rick Perry, who is vocally opposed to the law, says the state can "deliver health care more efficiently, more effectively and cheaper than the federal government can."

___

UTAH

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 386,000 state residents are uninsured, or nearly 14 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Utah implemented a health insurance exchange before the federal Affordable Care Act was passed to help small businesses obtain insurance coverage for their employees. Utah is among 26 states that sued the federal government over the law. Republican Gov. Gary Herbert has criticized the individual mandate and the expansion of Medicaid rolls that administration officials say would cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars.

___

VERMONT

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 59,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 9.5 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Vermont in 2011 passed legislation to use the insurance exchange called for under the federal health care law as a springboard to launch a statewide, universal, publicly funded health care system by 2017.

___

VIRGINIA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: Nearly 1.1 million state residents are uninsured, or about 14 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Virginia has expressed its intent to create a health care exchange, but Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell has not acted on recommendations made by a gubernatorial advisory council. Virginia filed its own lawsuit challenging the health care law, but lost in federal appeals court.

___

WASHINGTON

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 927,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 13.8 percent

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna signed on to the health care lawsuit against the wishes of the state's Democratic governor and majority Democrats, but Washington state moved ahead this past legislative session with implementing its own health insurance exchange.

___

WEST VIRGINIA

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 244,000 West Virginians are uninsured, or about 13.5 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: West Virginia has enacted legislation allowing for a state-run health care exchange, but the state has slowed the pace of setting it up to see how the Supreme Court rules.

___

WISCONSIN

NUMBER OF UNINSURED: 526,000 state residents are uninsured, or about 9 percent.

WHERE THE STATE STANDS: Wisconsin has not begun setting up its health insurance exchange. Work on that was put on hold in January by Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who wanted to await the Supreme Court's decision.

___

WYOMING

Getting started with Apple's Podcasts app

Apple made mention of a standalone podcast app earlier this month, but most figured it would arrive with iOS 6 this fall. Not so. Earlier this week, Apple released Podcasts. It's free and universal, designed for both the iPhone and iPad.

When you first launch the app, you'll see the Library view, which features two columns of large tiles of your podcasts. Any podcasts you have previously subscribed to in iTunes get pulled in. There are two buttons at the bottom, labeled Podcasts and Top Stations. Tap the Top Stations button to browse popular podcasts by subject. At the top of this page is a toggle switch for browsing audio or video podcasts, and just below it is a dial you can swipe to view the various subject areas (some subjects feature subtopics). Below each subject are five large tiles; tap on a tile to listen/view that podcast.

Tap the Catalog button in the upper-left corner to discover new podcasts. You are given three views for the Catalog: Featured, Top Charts, and Search. When you find a podcast you like, tap on it to view its page. On each podcast page is a gray Subscribe button, which adds a tile to your Podcasts list. Below the podcast's title, Subscribe button, and ratings and comments is a handful of recent shows.

I've been using the Podcasts app for only two days, but what I like most about it is the clear differentiation it gives between streaming and downloading. To stream an episode, simply click on the title of an episode and it will begin playing. To download an episode, click the gray download button to the right of its title. Episodes you have downloaded are then listed without the download button. Better yet, when you do not have an Internet connection, episodes you have not previously downloaded are grayed out, giving you an easy-to-scan list of available episodes at your disposal while offline.

You are given great control over your subscriptions. You can temporarily suspend a subscription, which stops new episodes from showing up in the list, whether they are downloaded or not. To do so, click on the title of one of your subscriptions above the list of episodes and turn the Subscriptions button off. (Doing so does not remove the podcast from your list of subscriptions.) Below this Subscription on/off switch is an Auto-Download switch, which lets you either set up a list of episodes to stream or, when turned on, will automatically download new episodes as they become available.

To unsubscribe from a podcast, tap the Edit button in the upper-left corner of the Library view and then tap the X on one of the tiles to remove that podcast from your subscriptions. To the right of this button are two small buttons, which let you view your subscribed podcasts as these large tiles or as a list.

The Now Playing screen features play/pause, fast-forward, and rewind buttons, along with two buttons that let you skip back 10 seconds and skip forward 30 seconds. Tap the large tile of the podcast to reveal additional controls. You get a scrub bar, and a dial that lets you listen at half speed or double speed. There is also a button to share a link of the podcast (via e-mail, text, or Twitter), and another that lets you set a sleep timer if drifting off to podcasts is how you like to end your day.

Ancient human ancestors had unique diet

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? When it came to eating, an upright, 2 million-year-old African hominid had a diet unlike virtually all other known human ancestors, says a study led by the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany and involving the University of Colorado Boulder.

The study indicated that Australopithecus sediba -- a short, gangly hominid that lived in South Africa -- ate harder foods than other early hominids, targeting trees, bushes and fruits. In contrast, virtually all other ancient human ancestors tested from Africa -- including Paranthropus boisei, dubbed "Nutcracker Man" because of its massive jaws and teeth -- focused more on grasses and sedges, said CU-Boulder doctoral student Paul Sandberg, a co-author on the new study.

The A. sediba diet was analyzed using a technique that involved zapping fossilized teeth with a laser, said Sandberg. The laser frees telltale carbon from the enamel of teeth, allowing scientists to pinpoint the types of plants that were consumed and the environments in which the hominids lived. The carbon signals from the teeth are split into two groups: C3 plants like trees, shrubs and bushes preferred by A. sediba, and C4 plants like grasses and sedges consumed by many other early hominids.

The teeth from the two A. sediba individuals analyzed in the study had carbon isotope values outside the range of all 81 previously tested hominids. "The lack of any C4 evidence, and the evidence for the consumption of hard objects, are what make the inferred diet of these individuals compelling," said Sandberg.

"It is an important finding, because diet is one of the fundamental aspects of an animal, one that drives its behavior and ecological niche. As environments change over time because of shifting climates, animals are generally forced to either move or to adapt to their new surroundings," said Sandberg of CU-Boulder's anthropology department.

The researchers concluded from their scientific tests that bark and other fracture-resistant foods were at least a seasonal part of the A. sediba diet. While bark and woody tissues had not been previously documented as a dietary component of any other ancient African hominids, such foods are consumed by many contemporary primates and contain both protein and soluble sugars. The diet of A. sediba may have been similar to that of today's African savanna chimpanzees, Sandberg said.

One unique aspect of the project was the analysis of microscopic, fossilized particles of plant tissue known as phytoliths trapped in ancient tooth tarter, a hardened form of dental plaque, said corresponding study author Amanda Henry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.

"The fact that these phytoliths are preserved in the teeth of 2 million-year-old hominids is remarkable and speaks to the amazing preservation at the site," said Sandberg. "The phytolith data suggest the A. sediba individuals were avoiding the grasses growing in open grasslands that were abundant in the region at the time."

A third, independent line of study -- analyzing microscopic pits and scratches on A. sediba teeth, which reveal what they were eating at the time just prior to death -- also confirmed that at least one of the hominids was eating harder foods, said Sandberg.

A paper on the subject was published online by Nature on June 27. Other paper authors included Professor Matt Sponheimer of CU-Boulder, Peter Ungar of the University of Arkansas, Benjamin Passey of Johns Hopkins University, Lloyd Rossouw of the Bloemfontein National Museum in Bloemfontein, South Africa, Lee Berger and Marion Bamford of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and Darryl de Ruiter of Texas A&M University.

A. sediba is particularly intriguing to anthropologists. The first two individuals discovered -- a juvenile male and an adult female from the Malapa Cave site roughly 30 miles north of Johannesburg in 2008 --apparently had fallen into a hidden pit in the cave and died. With an upright posture and long arms, the curious creature appears to have characteristics of both primitive and modern hominids, including a human-like ankle, short fingers and a long thumb for possible precision gripping and a relatively complex brain compared to earlier hominids, according to researchers.

The jury is still out on exactly where these hominids land on the family tree. A. sediba may have been a descendant of A. africanus, which was spawned by A. afarensis, a hominid represented by "Lucy" who lived about three million years ago and is considered by many to be the matriarch of the human family.

The A. sediba remains at Malapa were dated to 2 million years by scientists, a precise number obtained by measuring the decay of isotopes of uranium into lead that occurred in a type of mineral deposit known as flowstone that capped the fossil-bearing layer.

Paleontological evidence, including pollen and phytoliths, shows that the region around Malapa likely was a mix of abundant grassland and woody vegetation about 2 million years ago, said Sandberg. The team's carbon isotope research on the ancient teeth of rodents and hooved mammals that inhabited the region at the time indicated they had a strong affinity for C4 grasses and sedges.

"What fascinates me is that these individuals are oddballs," said CU-Boulder's Sponheimer. "I had pretty much convinced myself that after four million years ago most of our hominid kin had diets that were different from living apes, but now I am not so sure. And while our sample is too small to be conclusive, the rate at which Malapa is spewing hominid fossils makes me reasonably certain we won't have to wait another two million years to augment our data set. "

The study was funded in part by the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, the Malapa Project at the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of Witwatersrand and the Max Planck Society.

Mitt Romney Wants The Washington Post To Retract - Business Insider

Politico's Dylan Byers scoops that Mitt Romney's campaign will meet with the Washington Post this afternoon to ask for a formal retraction of a June 21 story that suggested Bain Capital invested in firms that specialized in outsourcing American jobs.

They'll meet with executive editor Marcus Brauchli and other staffers at 2 p.m., Politico reported.

Romney's side didn't provide a comment to Politico, while the Washington Post said they were looking into the issue.

Here's a rundown from the June 21 story:

In its examination of SEC filings, the Post found that Romney's private equity firm Bain Capital was an early investor in firms that specialized in outsourcing. "Bain played several roles in helping these outsourcing companies, such as investing venture capital so they could grow and providing management and strategic business advice as they navigated this rapidly developing field," wrote Tom Hamburger, the author of the article. (Romney campaign officials declined to comment on Bain?s record of investing in outsourcing firms under Romney.)

UPDATE, 11:30 p.m.:?

Politico's Byers reports that the Washington Post will not retract their June 21 story about Bain Capital's outsourcing investments, despite requests from the Romney campaign.?

According to Byers, officials from the campaign met with the Post's executive editor Marcus Brauchli to ask for a retraction, but their request was rebuffed.?

"We are very confident in our reporting," a spokeswoman for the paper told Byers.?

Air Conditioning Maintenance At Pete's Auto Repair & Sales INC. In ...

Air Conditioning Maintenance At Pete's Auto Repair & Sales INC. In Waupun

Most Waupun area car owners don?t service their air conditioning until after it fails. Maintaining your family car air conditioning system means that you always have enough refrigerant to properly do the job. Small leaks in the air conditioning system allow the refrigerant to escape and the system can?t cool the air as well.

Along with the refrigerant, a special oil circulates in the system. The oil lubricates air conditioning components, and keeps the seals resilient. Low refrigerant and lubricating oil means that the air conditioning parts will wear out prematurely, and we all know that air conditioning repairs can be costly in Fond du Lac.

Air conditioning service at Pete?s Auto Repair & Sales INC. in Waupun starts with a visual inspection of the components for signs of damage or leaks. The compressor is driven by a belt from the engine, most often the serpentine belt, so it?s inspected for cracks or wear.

The air conditioning compressor and other components are checked for proper operation by your Pete?s Auto Repair & Sales INC. service advisor. Then comes the leak test. If a leak is detected, often in a hose or connection, it?s repaired and the family car system is retested. Your Pete?s Auto Repair & Sales INC. technician will also perform a temperature drop test.

If needed, the old refrigerant is evacuated and the system is recharged with clean, fresh refrigerant. A final test insures that the air conditioner is working, and you?re on your way.

How often this should be done at Pete?s Auto Repair & Sales INC. varies from vehicle to vehicle. Your family car owner?s manual will have the manufacturer?s recommendation and, of course, your personable Pete?s Auto Repair & Sales INC. service advisor can tell you. It?s typically every two years.

Scientists develop a spray-on battery

1 hr.

Scientists in the United States have developed a paint that can store and deliver electrical power just like a battery.?

Traditional lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics. They are already pretty compact but limited to rectangular or cylindrical blocks.

Researchers at Rice University in Houston, Texas, have come up with a technique to break down each element of the traditional battery and incorporate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any surface.

"This means traditional packaging for batteries has given way to a much more flexible approach that allows all kinds of new design and integration possibilities for storage devices," said Pulickel Ajayan, who leads the team on the project.

The rechargeable battery is made from spray-painted layers, with each representing the components of a traditional battery: two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.?

The paint layers were airbrushed onto ceramics, glass and stainless steel, and on diverse shapes such as the curved surface of a ceramic mug, to test how well they bond.

One limitation of the technology is in the use of difficult-to-handle liquid electrolytes and the need for a dry and oxygen-free environment when making the new device.?

The researchers are looking for components that would allow construction in the open air for a more efficient production process and greater commercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on the project, believes the technology could be integrated with solar cells to give any surface a stand-alone energy capture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the device using nine bathroom tiles coated with the paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteries powered a set of light-emitting diodes for six hours, providing a steady 2.4 volts.

The results of the study were published on Thursday in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.?

Top Tips For Web Hosting Users And Providers | Online Marketing ...

If you are considering using a particular web hosting site, read reviews about it. Specifically, check for reviews written by users of the site?s hosting services. Just as you wouldn?t make a major electronics purchase without first checking out product reviews, nor should you bypass looking at reviews for web hosting sites you?re considering using. Doing this now can save you frustration further down the road.

Take the time to research web hosts on the internet or on specific blogs. Then narrow down your first few choices. There are far too many web hosts, to do research on every one. But, by researching a short list of hosts you can avoid all the pitches and gimmicks that many of the hosts will try to sell you on.

Don?t choose your web hosting provider based solely on price. Although using a cheap or free web host may save you money in the short run, these hosts might not offer the disk space or bandwidth you need. Price should be only one factor in your final decision so that you ensure that you get what you most need.

Prior to signing up with a web hosting service, consider the fact that you may want to add more sites in the future. This will keep your options open if you start with a company that allows for multiple site hosting. Consider the approximate number of sites you may add, as some web hosting companies will allow for unlimited add-on domains, and look for your best option.

Consider registering your domain name with a separate company, instead of your web host. This way, if things go awry with your web host, there will not be the possibility of your domain name being held for no good reason. As well, web hosting companies often do not have the most robust organizational tools for domain names. A company dedicated to domain names may be better suited if you have a lot of websites.

Be wary of review sites that are also affiliates of a web hosting company. While affiliate marketing is a legitimate sales approach, if a site is being paid a commission for sales of a product or service, they are more likely to review it favorably. After all, they will not make any affiliate money if nobody makes a purchase. Instead, look for user reviews or recommendations from friends and family if you want unbiased opinions.

One thing to consider when trying to choose a free web hosting service is whether or not the hosting provider will have display ads on your website. Most free providers will have display adds but if this is something you need to avoid, there are some free hosting providers that won?t have them.

Guaranteed uptime is important, but read the fine print carefully. From your perspective, a guarantee of 99.9% uptime means that your site will be available and running 99.9% of the time. That is usually not the case. It generally means the web hosting company is available 99.9% of the time. Your site may be down, but the company is not responsible if they are running well.

Take email needs into account when choosing a web hosting plan. Most plans will include some basic email services, but if you need additional mailboxes or storage, you may have to purchase an extra package or select another tier of service. Some inexpensive plans may also limit the number of emails you can send in a day.

Beware of web hosting services that charge very low fees, remembering that you get what you pay for. If you really only need a one-page site to direct customers to a brick-and-mortar business, then by all means go for a $5 a month provider. However, if you plan to do any kind of online business transactions, or are reliant on high-end graphics and a lot of information, then pay for what you need.

Do not be deterred from using a web hosting service that employs customer service agents in a foreign country. Though it may be difficult to understand various accents at times, realize that many countries spend extraordinary amounts of time and energy in making their citizens technologically superior. This is particularly true of India, which is why many companies employ educated technology services overseas.

Look for a company that offers an ?uptime guarantee.? Uptime is also known as the amount of time that a server is online for, as opposed to down, for service or maintenance. A reliable web host should be able to offer some sort of guarantee that your site will be available at least 98 percent of the time, with superior web hosts able to offer 99.9 percent uptime.

Before deciding to ditch your current web host and go for one that is cheaper, consider the software platforms of other companies. You will want to make sure that they are compatible with your current provider, so that you can easily transfer or replicate your files. Save yourself some real headaches by choosing carefully.

Stay away from a web host who has an issue with automating or properly administrating the most basic and necessary aspect of business. If you see they have issues with their billing and payments, then try to stay away from them since this usually means that they will have many other issues including having frequent site outages.

When in doubt, simply go online and do some price comparisons against the hosting price your web developer wants to charge. Chances are, you will find a better price for hosting elsewhere. Take advantage of the information here to help decide which web hosting company best fits your needs and saves you the most money.

Researchers are watching the first scenes of a cosmic show that's expected to heat up over the next year as a giant gas cloud approaches the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.

The impending collision was the subject of a research paper published in Nature last December, and now the European Research Media Center is providing an update: By mid-2013, the cloud is expected to pass in the vicinity of the black hole, known as Sagittarius A*, at a distance of 36 light-hours, or less than 25 billion miles (40 billion kilometers).

Black holes are gravitational singularities so dense that nothing, not even light, can escape their grip. They can only be detected by their gravitational influence on their surroundings, or by the blazing swirl of material being sucked down into their maw.

Some black holes are thought to be created when massive stars collapse. Others, like Sagittarius A*, are thought to be crushed into existence as part of the galaxy formation process. Sagittarius A* is 4.3 million times as massive as our sun, and is located 27,000 light-years from our solar system. There's no danger that this black hole will gobble up the galaxy???in fact, it's unusually well-behaved, which is one reason why humanity has been able to hang around long enough to detect it.

Stefan Gillessen, an astrophysicist at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, has been observing Sagittarius A* for the past 20 years. He?says next year's encounter could provide an unprecedented view of our supermassive black hole at its best ... or at its worst.

"So far, there were only two stars that came that close to Sagittarius A*," the media center quotes him as saying. "They passed unharmed, but this time will be different: The gas cloud will be completely ripped apart by the tidal forces of the black hole."

Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory say the speed of the cloud's progress has nearly doubled over the past seven years, to more than 5 million mph (8 million kilometers per hour). They report that the cloud's edges are already beginning to shred. During the months to come, it should break up into elongated filaments.?"It will look like spaghetti," Gillessen said.

The cloud is also expected to get much hotter, and will probably start emitting X-rays.

Reinhard Genzel, who heads the ESO's team of astronomers, said the show won't end with next year's expected encounter.

"The next few years will be really fantastic and exciting, because we're probing the territory," he said in the media center's video report. "Here this cloud comes in, gets disrupted, but now it will begin to interact with the hot gas right around the black hole. We have never seen this before."

Long Waits For Refinance, Refinance Turn Times - Real Estate ...

Interested in refinancing and taking advantage of today?s record low mortgage rates? You might need to hurry up and wait. Due to increased demand and the many new regulatory hurdles put in place since the housing meltdown it can often take weeks if not months to close a refinance loan these days.

Most banks and mortgage lenders don?t publicize their turn times, or how long it takes on average to get from application to closing, but there are many indications that the approval process is taking longer than in years past. First, you don?t have to go far within the industry to hear grumbling among professionals about how time consuming it can be to get to closing. There can be waiting involved in each stage of the process from the appraisal to processing to underwriting to scheduling the closing. A second clue is that lenders are advertising longer rate lock periods. Today on ForTheBestRate.com, a mortgage rate research website, only half of the advertisers posting North Carolina mortgage rates listed that their pricing was for a 30 day lock, once the standard closing window. Most of the others were offering a 45 day rate lock, and one bank even lists a 60 day rate lock.

So what does this mean to you if you are hoping to refinance and want to make sure today?s low rates don?t pass you by? First, work with your mortgage representative to understand what to realistically expect. If closing quickly is important to you ask about turn times when shopping around for loan offers, and take the answers into consideration when selecting which lender to work with. If you don?t mind waiting a bit longer you can more heavily weight other factors such as pricing and service levels.

Once you choose a representative and are ready to lock in a mortgage rate ask how long the pricing is locked in for (generally 30, 45, or 60 days) and what will happen if the loan does not close on time. Rate locks can generally be extended for a fee. Some lenders will cover these fees for their clients, and others might charge some or all of this fee to the borrower. Be sure you know up front how this will be handled in your case and whether you are comfortable with the lender?s policy.

As the borrower you can play a role in helping things move quickly or allowing them to drag on and on. Try to be as available as possible and let your mortgage representative know how best to get in touch with you, whether it?s by email, phone, or even text. Respond to requests for additional information or documentation with as little delay as possible. It is common for mortgage applicants to feel frustration when asked for some new paperwork after weeks of waiting, but try to remember that the mortgage team was busily working on other loan files while yours was in line. If you?re concerned about how things are progressing don?t hesitate to reach out to your representative for an update. Hourly phone calls might not be helpful, but checking in every so often will likely put your mind at ease.

During the process it is of utmost importance that you continue to pay your existing mortgage on time every month. Don?t cancel any automatic payments or bank drafts you have set up until you receive confirmation that your loan has been paid in full by your new mortgage. If you skip a payment because you thought the new loan would be closed before the due date you run the risk of a late mortgage payment interfering with your ability to qualify for the new loan.

If you are in the market for a mortgage to buy a home rather than refinance an existing loan it might be comforting to know that many banks and lenders will prioritize purchase transactions, and often are able to get them to the closing table much more quickly. This is because when buying a home a severely delayed closing date could result in a cancelled sale and the borrowers missing out on the property, where with a refinance the stakes are rarely as high.

Kuo Lab's Research Creates a New Prognosis Tool for Deadly Brain ...

Madison, Wisconsin - A diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is generally a death sentence, but new research from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health lab of Dr. John Kuo, MD, PhD, shows that at least one subtype is associated with a longer life expectancy.

?

This discovery could help with better patient prognoses and lead to targeted drug treatments for the cancer subtypes.

?

John KuoPeople diagnosed with GBM live on average less than 15 months after diagnosis, even after undergoing aggressive surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. But not all GBM cancers are the same, and Kuo's study outlines a new method for sub-typing GBM tumor lines by the proteins they express.

?

The July issue of the journal Clinical Cancer Research highlighted the research with a commentary by Dr. Jeremy Rich, of the Cleveland Clinic, who wrote that the School of Medicine and Public Health study changes the current understanding of the cancer stem cells believed to drive this type of cancer.

?

The paper, published early online, shows that people who have a subtype of GBM that expresses a particular protein, known for short as CNP, may have a less aggressive subtype of cancer. The survival rate for those with the subtype is sometimes measured in years, not months.?

?

The group isolated tumor lines from five human patients and grew them in the lab, and then looked for biomarkers specific to each line. They later transplanted the tissue into the brains of mice with compromised immune systems.

?

The researchers also looked for the CNP subtype in samples from 115 human patients and then looked at data on survival rates for those patients. They found that some patients with the protein lived much longer, as long as 10 years after diagnosis.

?

"We found that this protein was correlated with a less invasive type of cancer in mice, and when we looked at samples of human tumors, remarkably, we also found that the less invasive tumors expressed the CNP protein," says Kuo, assistant professor of neurological surgery and human oncology.

?

Kuo, who directs the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program for the UW Carbone Cancer Center, says the sub-typing could lead to more accurate prognosis for patients with a GBM diagnosis. Currently, most sub-typing of GBM tumors is based on mRNA, which can be difficult to do. But Kuo says that most hospitals can run assays for proteins, making the test simpler and easier.

?

In addition, says Michael Zorniak, Kuo's graduate student and lead author on the paper, the new way of typing tumors could lead to designer chemotherapy for GBM.

?

"As we understand how tumors are differentiated, we can start devising personalized therapies that are targeted to the specific sub-type of cancer," he says. "This can help us gain leverage against this difficult cancer."

?

For example, researchers could create monoclonal antibodies that bind only to the CNP type of cancer, in the way that some subtypes of breast cancer are currently targeted.

Analysis: Teamwork, controls yield rare comeback for MFS

BOSTON (Reuters) - For the rare comeback story among money managers, look to MFS Investment Management, one of the oldest names in the mutual fund business but also one of the most battered after the Internet bubble popped in 2000. Getting caught up in the industry's trading scandals just as stocks recovered only made matters worse.

Yet unlike other firms that crashed and remain on the outs a decade later -- a list that includes Janus Capital Group and AllianceBernstein Holding -- MFS is decidedly back.

The firm posted three years of inflows from 2009 to 2011, according to Lipper, a unit of Thomson Reuters. With $7 billion taken in through the end of May, its 2012 flows are on track to break its 1998 record haul of $13 billion. In May alone Morningstar ranked MFS inflows of $2.6 billion third in the entire industry.

The quiet shop in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood avoided the fate of so many others by improving and sustaining its investment performance while avoiding the worst of the financial crisis.

MFS Chief Executive Robert Manning, a onetime junk bond fund specialist who took over in 2004 after the market timing scandal, points to his emphasis on cooperation across stock and bond teams, plus an aggressive expansion of overseas offices that helped bring in institutional customers. His background also led him to install one of the industry's strongest risk management systems.

"If you grow up as a junk bond analyst and manager, there are nothing but bad things that can happen to you," Manning said in an interview.

TOUGHER TURNAROUNDS

Financial advisers said the firm's recent performance has gotten their attention.

Kristin Fafard, head of research for Federal Street Advisors in Boston, said her firm began recommending an MFS stock fund for the first time two years ago. She said Federal Street kept track of the MFS fund manager for a decade before it switched. MFS deserves credit for letting the manager, whom she declined to name, stick with his stocks even through bad runs.

The MFS story shows a bigger lesson: Engineering a fund company turnaround is much harder than in other industries.

An automaker's customers might defect, for instance, but they will be shopping for a new model in several years after the car wears out. But as long as returns are good, investors or wealth managers do not need to shop around for a replacement mutual fund. That can mean a longer lag before performance improvements draw back customers.

Take Clifford Caplan, president of wealth adviser Neponset Valley Financial Partners. Caplan once had about $3 million of client assets in MFS funds until he began pulling out in 2002.

Since 2009, MFS has gotten about $1 million worth of his clients' money again, mostly through indirect channels like variable annuities.

In lieu of MFS funds, Caplan now uses international bond funds from Pimco and Fidelity Advisor New Insights as a large-cap growth fund. "When you move money to another fund family, you're unlikely to go back. It's not because of the past egregious acts, but because you have new relationships," Caplan said.

Comparing the collective performance of a fund family to its competitors is a challenging task. Simply reviewing average fund performance fails to account for firms' running more funds in strong or weak underlying markets.

According to Lipper, at least half of the assets invested in MFS funds have performed better than the average in their categories over the past five years. In the tough year of 2008, MFS funds beat 59 percent of peers on an asset-weighted basis, Lipper found. Competitors like Janus and Putnam Investments have been below average three of the past five years, and Legg Mason Inc funds for two years. AllianceBernstein funds have been below average each year.

MFS is the only one of the group to post positive inflows each year since 2009, and for 2012 through May.

LESS PRESSURE, FEWER EGOS

In a recent interview at the company's office tower, CEO Manning described his approach as the opposite of the star system used by some rivals. Employees are expected to work closely together and sacrifice their egos as necessary; even fund managers with terrific performance records will face bonus cuts if they do not treat other employees respectfully, he said.

MFS also benefited from not being publicly traded directly like some of its competitors, who can be under more pressure to show short-term, quarterly improvements. MFS's owner, Canadian insurer Sun Life Financial Inc, stuck with the firm through hard times.

A low came in 2004 when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ordered MFS to pay $225 million to settle fraud charges involving market timing, and required then-CEO John Ballen to step down. Ballen and MFS did not admit or deny wrongdoing.

Manning, at the time the company's chief fixed-income officer, took over as CEO. A local boy from the blue-collar Massachusetts town of Methuen, Manning had joined MFS's high-yield group in 1984.

He often got offers to buy bonds from the king of the industry, Michael Milken. Manning says he also attended the infamous "Predators' Ball" conferences Milken hosted in Los Angeles.

In the end, Manning drew more cautious lessons from the high-finance era. He said Milken's firm, Drexel Burnham Lambert, sold MFS on some winners like McCaw Cellular. It also wound up with losers like hospital chain Republic Health Corp, which eventually went bankrupt.

Markets were less liquid at the time, making it hard to find a buyer for assets tied up in court proceedings. Defaults could force investors into legal cases that could take years to resolve. Risk controls were key.

In that spirit, Manning set about putting more controls in place and naming a chief investment risk officer for the entire firm. He brought along a bond colleague, Michael Roberge, to oversee all investments. Roberge became president of MFS in 2010.

COHESION YIELDS WARNINGS

The changes paid off in 2007, when MFS bond specialists started to detect worrisome signs about credit exposure and mortgages. Because of the tight team meetings, they passed on warnings to equities analysts and managers who then avoided some of the worst blowups, like AIG and Fannie Mae.

The message was, "It's time to get in the bunkers and stay there," recalled Kevin Conn, leader of MFS's global financial services sector team.

Morningstar analyst Bridget Hughes credits MFS with avoiding financials at the time. More recently controls have kept its funds from being too volatile. There is some risk from worrying too much about risk, she said. "The risk is that they move into mediocrity," she said, if too many controls force managers to move away from contrarian bets.

Overall the company has done a good job restoring and sustaining performance, she said. That is important as investors increasingly look to a fund's results over three and five years, rather than chasing the hottest managers of the moment.

"Performance sticks with you," she said. "It takes some time for bad years to roll off" a fund's record.
