Joke Super PAC Accuses Romney of Being a Serial Killer (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow," a super PAC founded by late night satirist Stephen Colbert but now controlled by another late night satirist, Jon Stewart, has released an ad accusing Mitt Romney of being a serial killer, according to the Daily Caller.

The ad is narrated by John Lithgow, who played a serial killer known as "the Trinity Killer" in Season 4 of "Dexter."

The logic behind the ad is something like this: Romney once stated that corporations are people too, which they are not only for tax purposes but also because they are comprised of people. Romney, while CEO of Bain Capital, was obliged to put a number of corporations down. Hence, Romney is a serial killer.

It is unknown whether Romney, after having dismembered the corporations, wrapped them up in plastic garbage bags and dumped them at the bottom of the sea, as Dexter Morgan does in his Showtime series. Nor is it known whether Romney strapped the corporations to a table with duct tape and lectured them on the unwise business practices that brought them to the pass they had found themselves in.

The ad is obviously having fun, but accusing Romney of being a serial killer is no more weird than accusing Mitt Romney of speaking French, as a pro-Gingrich ad once did, or Romney openly thinking Gingrich was a little "zany" for believing that lunar mining colonies might be a good idea. That is one problem with political satire. Sometimes the real life behavior of politicians defy it.

Romney, if he were to take this ad seriously, which he won't, might retort he is no serial killer at all. He was participating in an assisted suicide of corporations that were going to die a slow, painful death anyway. But then, no doubt, the Colbert/Stewart super PAC will call into question Romney's pro-life credentials. Romney would retort that he is against assisted suicide now. Then he would be accused of being a flip flopper.

The potential for satire is endless. Indeed being able to poke fun is one way to make the misbehavior of politicians all the more bearable.
