A CAREER in health care is not a prerequisite to helping take the Sunshine Coast's healthcare system into a new era.

The Queensland Government is seeking people with skills in management, law, academia or patient advocacy to join with health professionals in a community push for better distribution of health funds.

Sunshine Coast Local Health and Hospital Network will serve 390,000 people who use Gympie, Maleny, Caloundra and Nambour hospitals.

Sunshine Coast Health Service District chief Kevin Hegarty said creating LHHNs as statutory bodies was about ensuring local decision-making and local accountability.

"I would encourage anyone who wants to play a key role in helping deliver quality health services for the Sunshine Coast to access further details," he said.

Australian Medical Association spokesman Mason Stevenson is among those who have begun the application process to be on the network's governance board.

He said the board spots were open to all health practitioners and non-health individuals who had skills to help "oversee or match public health funding to hospital and community services to look after citizens' needs".

Mr Stevenson said the centralised Queensland Health governance model in Brisbane had failed health consumers and the board would take over important aspects of health service delivery and budgeting in large health districts.

"We want to ensure precious tax health dollars are getting to the front line to the full extent possible.

"This is more achievable if health practitioners and health consumers are given greater power and influence in order to achieve this."

The formal expression of interest process ends on October 21 and the board will begin on July 1, 2012.
