Science & Society Distinguished Public Talks Begins Fall Series ...
The Sci?ence & Soci?ety Dis?tin?guished Pub?lic Talks Series presents, ?Overview and Sta?tus of Con?cen?trat?ing Solar Power Tech?nolo?gies,? a talk by by Thomas Mancini on Thurs?day, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. A meet and greet will also be held begin?ning at 4:30 p.m. The lec?ture, which is free and open to the pub?lic, will be held in room C at the Uni?ver?sity of New Mex?ico Con?fer?ence Cen?ter, located at 1634 Uni?ver?sity Blvd., NE. Plenty of free park?ing is available.
The will focus on Con?cen?trat?ing Solar Power (CSP) tech?nolo?gies that uti?lize con?cen?trat?ing col?lec?tors to focus the sun?s energy on a ther?mal receiver where the radia?tive heat is col?lected. CSP tech?nolo?gies don?t gen?er?ate elec?tric?ity directly, as do pho?to?voltaic sys?tems, but use the col?lected ther?mal energy to drive heat engine/generators and pro?duce elec?tric?ity. To achieve economies of scale, CSP sys?tems are gen?er?ally large, util?ity? scale sys?tems with capac?i?ties of 100 MW or larger. The talk will explore the three basic sys?tem archi?tec?tures of CSP tech?nolo?gies: line focus, par?a?bolic troughs, point-focus cen?tral receivers or power tow?ers and point-focus dis?trib?uted receivers-dish/Stirling systems.
The talk will also review one of the ?key? char?ac?ter?is?tics that some CSP sys?tems are uti?liz?ing ? cost effec?tive ther?mal energy stor?age that allows for the dis?patch of elec?tric?ity as needed. Lastly, we dis?cuss the sta?tus of CSP deploy?ments around the world and here in the USA. While Spain cur?rently leads the world in CSP deploy?ments, there are more than 1.5 GW of CSP sys?tems under con?struc?tion in the South?west?USA.
Mancini recently formed TRMancini Solar Con?sult?ing spe?cial?iz?ing in the tech?ni?cal eval?u?a?tion and review of con?cen?trat?ing solar (also known as solar ther?mal elec?tric) power com?po?nents and sys?tems. Prior to his cur?rent posi?tion he was the Con?cen?trat?ing Solar Power (CSP) pro?gram man?ager at San?dia National Lab?o?ra?to?ries in Albu?querque, where he led research and devel?op?ment as part of the Depart?ment of Energy?s Solar Energy Tech?nol?ogy Pro?grams. Mancini,a Fel?low of the Amer?i?can Soci?ety of Mechan?i?cal Engi?neers (ASME) has pub?lished more than 150 tech?ni?cal papers and reports. Mancini also served as the chair of the Inter?na?tional Energy Agency?s Solar Power and Chem?i?cal Energy Sys?tems imple?ment?ing Agree?ment from 2004 until?2011.
The Sci?ence & Soci?ety Dis?tin?guished Pub?lic Talks series are co-sponsored by Albu?querque Sec?tion of the Insti?tute of Elec?tri?cal & Elec?tronic Engi?neers (IEEE), Sigma Xi (the Sci?en?tific Research Soci?ety), the Depart?ment of Physics & Astron?omy, Col?lege of Arts & Sci?ences, Uni?ver?sity Hon?ors Pro?gram, and the Divi?sion of Con?tin?u?ing Education.
