Heel Turns: Musings of a wrestling god | Philly Phanatics - THE ...
Every champion will be in action Sunday night. No, I?m not referring to the Eagles-Falcons game. If you would take off your green-tinted glasses, you?d realize the Eagles aren?t champions. In fact, they haven?t won a championship in 51 years.
Oh yeah, they looked good in their opener ? against the injury-depleted Rams. Let?s take LeSean McCoy out of the Eagles? lineup in the first quarter, knock DeSean Jackson out later and have Michael Vick leave in the fourth quarter. That?s what happened to the Rams on Sunday. Could you wait until the Eagles win a playoff game before the Super Bowl talk heats up?
The Phillies are in action Sunday night against the Cardinals. But the Phillies aren?t champions, either. Their championship, just the second in franchise history, came three years ago. They are the favorites to win the World Series this year. But they weren?t supposed to lose to the Giants last season, were they?
The champions I?m referring to, of course, are the champions of the WWE. Every title will be on the line Sunday night at WWE?s ?Night of Champions? pay-per-view.
Ironically, the headline match is the only match that doesn?t involve a title. Triple H meets C.M. Punk in a no-disqualification match. If Punk wins, Triple H must resign as WWE?s chief operating officer.
This is being presented as a personal feud, with wrestling storylines blurred with real life issues. I?ll have more to say about this feud later in the column, but my Spidey sense detects a controversial ending. With a no-disqualification stipulation, it wouldn?t be surprising to see the ?fired? Kevin Nash and John Laurinaitis, vice president in charge of talent relations, get involved in the match. It would be more surprising, but possible, to see Mrs. Triple H, better known as Stephanie McMahon, involved in this match in some capacity.
Alberto Del Rio defends the WWE Championship against John Cena. Regular readers of Heel Turns know of my admiration for Del Rio as champion. He should keep the title.
Randy Orton defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Mark Henry. This bout has had the classic build, with the immensely powerful Henry destroying every superstar in his path, including Big Show, Kane and the ?future endeavored? Vladimir Kozlov. Henry has also been getting the better of Orton in recent weeks in non-match confrontations. This reminds me of the old days where the monster heel gets built up to the point that it seems the title is in jeopardy. Then, as should happen Sunday, it makes it more meaningful when the champion figures out a way to vanquish his opponent.
Can Kelly Kelly find a way to keep her Divas title against Beth Phoenix? I?m not sure. I think Phoenix will prevail. But I thought that would happen at Summer Slam as well. Sunday?s card is also in Phoenix?s hometown of Buffalo, and we know how WWE loves to have wrestlers lose in their hometowns.
I think The Miz and R-Truth would be a tremendously entertaining tag team. Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne are just getting started, but, without logical individual feuds for them right now, I?ll take Miz and R-Truth to capture the tag team gold.
Dolph Ziggler is defending the United States Championship in a four-way match with John Morrison, Alex Riley and Jack Swagger. The dynamic to this match will clearly be the battle between Ziggler and Swagger, who is battling Ziggler for Vickie Guerrero?s attention and managerial services. I can?t see either of these guys becoming a fan favorite, although they teased a Swagger turn during the Michael Cole-Jerry Lawler feud. Morrison shouldn?t win the title with an assist from Swagger. If he were to become U.S. champion, it should be in a one-on-one match. Therefore, I think Riley will win, with Swagger costing Ziggler the championship. I don?t like this result, but I think that?s what will happen.
That leaves Cody Rhodes defending the Intercontinental Championship. I don?t reveal spoilers here, but Ted DiBiase would be the logical challenger. Unfortunately, this feud has been pushed aside during the RAW-Smackdown cross promotion. Whomever he faces, Rhodes should retain his title.

LISTEN TO THE HEEL! With regard to Mr. Anderson being added to the Sting-Angle main event at ?No Surrender? at the last minute, I wrote last week, ?nothing generates interest like changing the main event at the last minute (sarcasm intended).?
Judging by the crowd reaction to that match, the quietest Angle main event since he wrestled Mark Henry at a pay-per-view back in WWE, I was 100 percent correct in my assessment. Did you expect anything less from the Greek god of wrestling?

POINT TAKEN: I also ripped TNA for having the Bound for Glory Series decided by points. TNA, to its credit, ended the series with a match after Bully Ray and Bobby Roode ended up tied in points. So I?ll retract that criticism. The rest of my criticism of TNA and the Bound for Glory Series stands.

CHIKARA TAKES MANHATTAN: CHIKARA heads north next weekend for a Saturday night card in Brockton, Mass., and a Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) card at The Highline Ballroom in Manhattan. The Brockton card is headlined by two ?12 Large: Summit? matches: Mike Quackenbush vs. Icarus, and Jigsaw vs. Vin Gerard.
Figuring PhillyPhanatics.com readers are more likely to make the trip up to New York than Massachusetts to get their CHIKARA fix ? CHIKARA doesn?t return to Pennsylvania until Oct. 29 (in Reading) ? I?ll offer a little more detail on the Manhattan card.
Fans of tag teams should enjoy Sunday?s card. Jigsaw and Quackenbush take on Johnny Gargano and Chuck Taylor. In another tag team bout, Matt and Nick Jackson, widely known as The Young Bucks, battle Tim Donst and Tursas. As if that weren?t enough, Soldier Ant and Green Ant of The Colony face fellow ?good guys? The Throwbacks. To top it all off, there?s an eight-man tag team match pitting The Spectral Envoy and a mystery partner against The Dark Army, led by Sinn Bodhi.
Gregory Iron, who has received attention lately after being mentioned by C.M. Punk, faces Icarus. There is also a pair of 12 Large: Summit matches, with Eddie Kingston battling Fire Ant, and Sara Del Rey facing Ophidian.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK: Fans of independent wrestling can enjoy a nice weekend in New York. The night before the CHIKARA show in Manhattan, Ring of Honor will be at the Grand Ballroom in the Manhattan Center for ?Death Before Dishonor IX.?
There will be a ?ladder war? between the Briscoes, Jay and Mark, and The All Night Express, with the winners earning a title shot against champions Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas, both of whom will be in individual competition Saturday (7:30 p.m.). Eddie Edwards will meet Roderick Strong in a best-of-three-falls match, with the first fall being decided by pinfall, the second by submission and, if necessary, the third fall will be a 15-minute ironman match (most falls in 15 minutes wins).
The Young Bucks are on the card in a three-way elimination match with Future Shock and The Bravados. In another tag team match, Jay Lethal and Homicide battle Rhino and Tommaso Ciampa. In individual competition, El Generico takes on Jimmy Jacobs.
*****
COUNTDOWN TO TV: Ring of Honor?s syndicated television program hits the airwaves on Sat., Sept. 24. Unfortunately for wrestling fans in the Delaware Valley, there is not a local affiliate lined up yet. As I?ve said before, I think Ring of Honor?s show could take a bite out of TNA?s audience.
*****
INSIDER INFORMATION: The Punk-Triple H storyline has been sidetracked a bit with far too many ?insider? references. Nash, Punk and Triple H have been referring too frequently to issues that go over the heads of at least 90 percent of the audience. An insider reference once in a while isn?t a bad idea, but there are far too many of these types of references during the promos in this feud.

LIVING IN THE PAST: Sting and Ric Flair headlined Impact Wrestling on Thursday night. No, this is not an old item that slipped into my column. Ten years after their ?farewell? match on the final episode of WCW?s Nitro, Sting and Flair wrestled again on Impact Wrestling.
I am writing this before the match appears on TV, but I have a feeling Thursday?s Flair vs. Sting match on Impact Wrestling won?t be remembered as fondly as their match on the final Nitro, which is one of the most memorable television programs in wrestling history.
*****
LIVING ON THE EDGE: It?s always great to see Bret ?The Hitman? Hart, who appeared on RAW on Monday and is scheduled to be on Smackdown on Friday. Smackdown also will feature an appearance by another of my all-time favorites, Edge, who should receive a warm reception in his hometown of Toronto.

COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT: Drew McIntyre lost to Zack Ryder on Superstars. Again. I?m at a loss as to why WWE continues to waste McIntyre?s talent.
