City offers adult softball tourney Residents are invited to participate in the End of the Summer Coed Softball One Pitch Tournament, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-11, at the Pine Banks softball field. This is a brand-new event for adults and is offered through the city?s Recreation Department.
Each game is staffed with an umpire. There is a four-game guarantee, with games lasting about 45 minutes. The championship team will receive a trophy. The tournament is open to players ages 18 and up. All teams must have three female players and at least 10 players total.
Registration fee: $25 per individual or $200 per team. To register, or more information, email recreation@cityofmelrose.org or call 781-979-4179.
Melrose Flag Football League offered to youths Registration is under way for the Melrose Flag Football League, which is open to several age groups: 5-6 years old, 7-8 years, 9-11 years, and 12-14 years.
This league is offered through the city?s Recreation Department, in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and USA Football. The program focuses on socialization, playing skills, teamwork and basic game strategies. The league will run for an eight-week season, which includes playoffs (5-6 year olds will not have playoffs).
The season runs from Sept. 14 through Nov. 16 (no sessions on Oct. 12 or Nov. 9). Meet on Saturdays, 4-7 p.m., at Fred Green Field (located outside of Melrose High School, on Lynn Fells Parkway). Each session starts with a 45-minute practice, immediately followed by their one-hour team game.
In addition to the regular season, all players are required to attend the Skills Combine day on Sept. 7, starting at 4 p.m. sharp and continuing till 6 p.m. This is a fun day that allows kids to meet others in the league and to demonstrate their athletic ability through skills and drills run by the coaches. By having kids attend the Skills Combine, it assists the Recreation Department in being able to try to create balanced teams in the league.
Cost: $95 per person. Registration continues until Aug 23. Registration is online only for this program; click here. (Or, go to cityofmelrose.org/dept_recreation.cfm and click on the ?Fall Flag Football? link.) For more information, call 781-979-4179 or email recreation@cityofmelrose.org.
Each game will be staffed with referees. Each player will receive their own game jersey. Team scores, standings, pictures and game videos will be posted on the new Melrose Flag Football website for parents and players to enjoy. At the end of the season all players will receive football trophy for participating.
