Singer/actress Miley Cyrus has stripped naked to pose for a saucy picture which will be splashed across the front of Marc Jacobs T-shirts for a skin cancer awareness campaign.

The former Hannah Montana star has posed completely nude for the Protect the Skin You're In campaign and her image has been reproduced on a line of T-shirts by the fashion designer. The garments are designed to raise awareness of the disease and a portion of the proceeds will go to cancer charities.

Cyrus writes in a post on Twitter.com, "(Marc Jacobs) so happy to help you help so many."

The star follows in the footsteps of Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell, Dita Von Teese and Miranda Kerr, who have posed naked for the T-shirt scheme in the past.

McDonnell announces leadership team for Virginia Adopts campaign

virginiaGov. Bob McDonnell has announced the state wide leadership team for ?Virginia Adopts: Campaign for 1,000,? an initiative to match 1,000 children currently in foster care with adoptive families. The leadership team, which consists of community leaders, elected officials, and adoption advocates, will serve to highlight the effort and promote adoption around Virginia. The announcement of the statewide leadership team comes the week before the Campaign for 1,000 Regional Kick-Off events will be taking place across the Commonwealth.

Speaking about the announcement, McDonnell said, ?Each of these individuals brings a unique perspective, strong community involvement, and compassion for Virginia?s children to the Campaign for 1,000. I am grateful to each member of the leadership team for their efforts and look forward to the success of the initiative. In the weeks ahead there will be opportunities for Virginia families to learn more about growing their family through adoption in the foster care system. I encourage anyone interested to attend one of the regional events and seek out more information. Children in foster care are there through no fault of their own, and just as much as any child, they deserve a loving, secure, and stable family and home.?

Mrs. Kay Coles James and Mrs. Bobbie Kilberg will serve as the State Co-Chairs for the initiative. Dr. Allan Morris, Delegate Chris Peace, Senator Emmett and Mrs. Sharon Hanger, Mr. Chuck Slemp, Delegate David Toscano, Mrs. Karey Nobles, Supervisor Marty and Mrs. Kristina Nohe, Mrs. Angie Landes, Fr. Wayne Ball, Secretary Doug and Mrs. Jeanne Domenech, the Reverend Jon Barton, Ms. Sophia Booker, and Senator George Barker will serve on the Statewide Steering Committee.

?

?When children age out of the foster care system without finding a permanent family, they face more significant challenges without a support system of any kind. With so many loving families in Virginia, I am confident we can find great matches for these 1,000 children. I am grateful to members of the Steering Committee for adding their support to this important effort,? stated Secretary of the Commonwealth Janet Kelly, who along with her husband Ryan is helping to lead the ?Virginia Adopts? initiative. ?These events will provide families who have thought about adoption with the information they need as they consider the impact of this decision on both their own families and the children who need adopting.?

Co-Chair Kay Coles James, former Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources and a former foster mom stated, ?When considering adoption, many people think that only babies or children in other countries are available. Any adoption is a selfless act of love, but many families don?t know that there are children right here in Virginia who need a forever family. I encourage any family who believes they have extra love to give to consider adopting out of the foster care system in Virginia. As with biological children, parenting these children isn?t always easy. However, as many foster and adoptive parents will tell you, the children often teach us more than we teach them,?

?Welcoming children into our hearts and homes is one of the best examples of Virginia?s hallmark generosity and kindness. The paths of the 1,000 children that the ?Virginia Adopts? program will match with families will be impacted in a positive way for the rest of these children?s lives, as well as life-changing for the adoptive families. I encourage Virginians to consider adopting out of the foster care system or supporting those who adopt in some meaningful way,? remarked Co-Chair Bobbie Kilberg, President and CEO of the Northern Virginia Technology Council and a mother of five children.

Westwood Community Chest contributions help residents

The Westwood Community Chest announces the close of another strong fiscal year when the community responded to help their neighbors who are in need of financial assistance. Contributions increased across all categories, including individual residents, businesses, special events and special campaigns with key businesses in town.

"We're incredibly grateful for the response and especially for the partnerships that we have formed with these businesses in town,? said Mary Ellen LaRose, president of WCC. ?Without their participation, we wouldn't be able to help nearly as many people. We'd like to especially thank Roche Bros., High Street Market and Whole Food Markets Dedham for sponsoring our Fill the Chest campaign. Decor & More and the Westwood Basketball Association also helped us by sponsoring special events. Additionally, Chiara was the host of our second annual An Evening of International Food & Wine. Medfield Wine Shoppe also contributed to that evening.?

WCC grants applicants financial assistance through a confidential temporary assistance program. The organization works with several town organizations such as Youth and Family Services, the Council on Aging, Westwood Public Schools, Westwood Police and other town departments to ensure that community members get the help that they need. The average award given was $600 to meet basic needs?medical expenses, utility bills and housing payments. In some cases, $1000 was awarded when catastrophic conditions have existed.

This past year, WCC granted $23,000 in utility awards including, oil, electric, gas, sewer water and primary phone. Many of those awards prevent utility shutoffs. $5,000 of medical bills were paid directly, $3,000 in housing costs, $11,000 of extenuating awards in various categories, and $14,000 of campership awards were also paid. These are just some of the types of awards that were paid.

Camperships are another very important part of the WCC mission. Sending children to camp each summer is a treasured part of families' experiences and a child's learning experience. Unfortunately, for some families, when hard times hit, that experience isn't always possible. WCC offers help. Once again this year, the WCC held three grant rounds in March, April and May. The WCC awarded up to $400 per child with a total of $750 per family and awarded approximately 35 camperships.

WCC is able to fund these financial grants and campership awards from donations to our annual appeal and from partnerships with businesses in the community. This year, WCC raised well over $67,000 from our annual appeal in the fall.

Most importantly, the WCC needs to spread the awareness of its mission so that everyone in Westwood who needs temporary financial assistance knows that Westwood Community Chest is there to help. For more information, visit wcc.cfsites.org or follow the WCC on Facebook, or call us at 781-366-0470.

World Chef: Silk Road travels inspire LA's Hinoki & the Bird

By Lisa Baertlein

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The exotic, earthy aroma from smoking sheets of smoldering hinoki wood hovering over exquisite black cod is the first hint that diners at celebrated chef David Myers' newest restaurant are in for a culinary adventure.

Hinoki & the Bird, the Japanophile chef's Silk Road-inspired restaurant, borrows heavily from the travels of Myers and Executive Chef Kuniko Yagi, who left banking a decade ago and worked her way up from the kitchen's lowest rungs to her current, globe-trotting career.

The sleekly casual eatery, located near some of Los Angeles' top talent agencies, is a departure from Sona, Myers' elegant, Michelin one-star restaurant that opened in 2002 - a year before Food & Wine magazine bestowed on him a prestigious "Best New Chef" award.

After Sona closed in 2010, Myers and his executive chef hit the road - eating, tweeting and picking up inspiration throughout Asia.

Their journeys inform dishes such as spicy sambal skate wing, drunken duck breast and hinoki-scented black cod, the head-turning dish referenced earlier.

The telegenic duo, who are familiar to fans of foodie shows such as "Top Chef" and "Iron Chef America," spoke with Reuters about how travel informed their careers and their latest project.

Q: David, what was the inspiration for Hinoki & the Bird's name?

A: Hinoki is an incredible cypress tree in Japan that has the most wonderful aroma. The bird component was to capture the essence of travel and how important travel is to the creative process. It's about the connection from California to Japan. We chronicle the bird's travel and bring it into the menu.

Q: David, what is your vision for Hinoki & the Bird?

A: I think California is the gateway to Asia. The idea is to showcase the California bounty and the scent of the Silk Road. The flavors are light, vibrant and healthy. You can come in and eat several different things and you're not feeling heavy. You're feeling sharp and you're ready to go the next day. I've only felt that in Asia - where you can eat a lot and drink a lot and feel great. The food of Southeast Asia is nothing but drinking food - it's about going around having beers and going to the next place.

Q: David, which dish on Hinoki & the Bird's menu best illustrates how your travels through Southeast Asia have influenced your food?

A: The sambal skate wing. That's our version of a barbecue skate wing from a hawker's stand in Singapore. That's the classic hawker stand dish.

Q: Kuniko, what inspired you to leave banking and become a chef?

A: I wanted to make sure I could have a job anywhere in the world. I thought, maybe if I can cook really well I can go anywhere in the world and be able to have a job. (In the beginning) I wasn't able to speak English much - but I thought I could mimic what people in the kitchen do.

Q: Kuniko, what advice would you give someone who makes a similar career leap?

A: Be humble about who you want to be. Nothing good happens in a year. I've been doing this for 10 years already. I started late. I was patient, and I had a couple of times where I wondered if I made the right choice.

Drunken Duck Breast

1/2 cup sake kasu (sake lees, a yeast by-product of sake making)

1 cup warm water

2 duck breasts

Salt & black pepper to taste

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.

In a small pot, place sake kasu and warm water and whisk over low heat until broken down to a loose texture. Remove from heat and let cool.

Score duck skin in a cross-hatch pattern and season with salt and pepper on both sides.

Cover the breasts with the sake kasu and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rest in the refrigerator for one hour.

Wash sake kasu off from duck breast and place the duck skin side down in a saut? pan over low heat, being careful not to burn. Render the skin from the breast, discarding the fat as you go.

When the skin has a golden brown color, place the breast in the oven for 7 minutes, skin side up, for medium rare.

iPad Mini 2 may only arrive in 2014

The next generation iPad Mini has been rumored almost since the first model became available. The main spec change that?s been pegged for the iPad Mini 2 so far is a Retina Display ? namely, in this case, keeping the 7.9? form factor but bumping the resolution up to 2,048?1,536. That?s the same resolution seen on the ?full-size? 9.7? iPad, hence the moniker.

However, new rumors now say that because of issues in the production of these small Retina Displays needed for the next iPad Mini, Apple?s new diminutive tablet may only arrive on the market next year.

apple_logo

According to the oft-quoted ?industry supply chain sources?, the iPad Mini 2 could enter mass production only in the fourth quarter of this year, making a release in 2013 unlikely. Early next year may then be when the small tablet will get its launch.

Aside from the resolution change, the new iPad Mini is also set to come with a new design, one that?s said to be almost ?bezel-free?. To keep people happy, and customers buying its stuff, Apple could release another iPad Mini in the meantime. This may come later this year with some improved specs, and should be thinner and lighter than the current generation. Which exact specs are due to be upgraded is unknown at this point.

(AP) ? Tribune Co. said Wednesday that it wants to split its broadcasting and publishing businesses into two companies.

Tribune said the move will let one company take advantage of growth in broadcasting and allow the other to focus on newspapers, an industry where revenue has been declining for years.

Chicago-based Tribune owns 23 TV stations and cable network WGN America. Earlier this month, it announced plans to buy Local TV Holdings and its 19 television stations for $2.73 billion. It also owns eight daily newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and The Baltimore Sun.

Fellow media company News Corp. completed a split into separate publishing and entertainment companies late last month.

Since the split became final on June 28, shares of News Corp., now a standalone publishing company, have edged up about 1 percent, closing Tuesday at $15.71. Shares of Twenty-First Century Fox Inc., the entertainment company, have risen about 4 percent to close Tuesday at $30.09.

Tribune, which emerged from bankruptcy protection at the end of 2012, said that over the past several months its board and management have been looking at ways to boost value for its stakeholders and long-term growth.

Tribune said in February that it hired a pair of investment banks to help it sell its newspapers. The move was largely at the behest of the group of lenders that took over the company as part of its reorganization.

Under the proposal announced Wednesday, the newspapers would be spun off into an independent company to be called Tribune Publishing Co.

The newspapers have been hurt by a shift that has driven more readers and advertisers to the Internet and mobile devices. The downturn in print advertising was one of the factors that caused Tribune to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008.

The remaining company would include Tribune's local television stations; WGN radio?and cable networks; its television production, digital and media services ventures; and its interests in Classified Ventures, CareerBuilder, and The TV Food Network and real estate.

Tribune said its board will develop a detailed plan for the split over the next nine to 12 months. After the split is complete, both companies will have separate boards and management.

Filipinos largest number of foreign nationals detained in Japan

By Matikas Santos
INQURER.net

MANILA, Philippines ? Filipinos are the largest number of foreign nationals detained in Japan for violations of its immigration laws, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said?Tuesday.

Last July 6, 75 Filipinos returned to the Philippines after being deported by the Japanese government. There were around 200 Filipinos detained in Japanese immigration centers, DFA spokesman assistant secretary Raul Hernandez told reporters in a media briefing.

?Prior to the deportation of the 75 Filipinos by chartered flight, there were over 200 Filipinos in Japanese immigration centers, constituting the highest number of foreign nationals detained in these centers,? he said.

?These are Filipinos who have been there in the immigration centers for some time now. Before 2013 deportees who do not consent to be deported will not be deported, so it?s only now that the Japanese government is deporting foreign nationals even without their consent,? Hernandez said.

Violation of immigration laws includes overstaying. The Philippines has the third largest number of illegal overstayers in Japan, trailing behind South Korea and China, Hernandez said.

Among those deported back to the Philippines were 54 adult males, 13 adult females, and 8 children. At least 100 more Filipinos are still in the detention centers.

?Filipinos with serious medical conditions, those who have existing family ties in Japan, and [have pending] cases filed in court were excluded in the deportation,? Hernandez said.

?They are constantly being visited by our embassy officials to find out their conditions, how they are treated, and if there are things we could assist them with,? he said.
