Arrival of 2012 heralds year of London Olympics

LONDON ? When Big Ben strikes 12 to ring in the New Year, no one will feel the level of anticipation ? and pressure ? more than organizers of the London Olympics.

With the arrival of 2012, the preparations will no longer be for "next year?s games."

The Olympics will be THIS year, less than seven months away ? exactly 209 days from Jan. 1 until the opening ceremony on July 27.

London has been preparing seven years for the games, ever since it defeated Paris in the final round of the International Olympic Committee vote in Singapore on July 6, 2005.

Now, the countdown is truly in the final stretch for the U.K.?s biggest peacetime exercise, or what organizing committee leader Sebastian Coe calls a "Halley?s Comet" moment for Britain.

In a busy year that also will feature Queen Elizabeth II?s Diamond Jubilee and the European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine, the Olympics stand out as the marquee event of the summer of 2012, a sporting festival that will put London at the epicenter of global attention for 17 days.

The start of 2012 carries symbolic and psychological significance for Coe, a two-time gold medalist in the 1,500 meters who knows the feeling of entering an Olympic year as an athlete.

"For us there will be the realization that there are no more years now. We are down to days," Coe said. "This is the Olympics and it doesn?t get any bigger, and the responsibility doesn?t get any greater than this."

In concrete terms, London is in solid shape as it approaches the moment when it will become the first city to host the Olympics for a third time, after previous games in 1908 and 1948.

The biggest concerns weigh on less predictable factors: security and transportation. Will the games be safe from terrorist attack? Will London?s already-stretched public transport network cope under the added strain?

Most of the venues are built and ready for the 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries who will converge on the city next summer for 16 days of competition in 26 sports and 300 medal events.

"I feel relaxed but certainly not complacent," Coe said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "We have big challenges, of course. Delivery of 26 world championships is never going to be a stroll in the park. We know these are the hard yards. There?s nothing easy about the next few months."

A former industrial wasteland in east London has been transformed into the Olympic Park, a 1-square-mile area featuring several flagship arenas and representing the centerpiece of a long-term regeneration project for one of the most deprived areas of England.

Financially, London has managed surprisingly well during some of the worst economic conditions in decades, raising more than $1 billion from sponsors.

"I really can?t think of a games that has been delivered in a more difficult climate since Montreal," Coe said, referring to the debt-ridden 1976 Olympics.

Despite a public outcry over a ticketing system that left hundreds of thousands of applicants empty-handed, organizers raked in hundreds of millions more in revenues from ticket sales. The games are virtually sold out and Coe?s privately-funded organizing committee, LOCOG, is on track to meet its $3.3 billion operating budget.

Video: 2011?s best triumphs and failures of government

>> comes to lawmakers, what were the past year's biggest triumphs and failures from the government? i'm joined by ed o'keefe from "the washington post " and the author of the federal eye blog and here to give us their take on what the government got right and the biggest oops of 2011 so far. let's talk about the good list. what did they do right?

>> topping the list is disaster response . fema had a banner year. you talk to democrats and know ares and lawmakers from all over who dealt with the disasters, 11 topped $1 billion. fema did a fantastic job responding ahead of the storm and providing a disaster relief as quickly as possible to the victims. if you think back a few years to how it performed after hurricane katrina , to say that fema has bipartisan praise.

>> government waste?

>> that was another big issue on improper payments and people who had medicare and medicate and took tax credits and the irs hasn't stopped them, it's a shrinking problem to its credit. the obama administration has been doing a lot to find this wasteful spending and cut down on it. it's a test of reporters and other who is keep tabs to make sure the numbers drop in the new year. they have done a good amount of cutting or made plans to cut.

>> with some of the other positive things you wrote about is the freedom of information act and they're more efficient when it comes to that.

>> agencies overall are granting freedom of information act requests at a healthier clip than in the past. that is part of a growing trend to cut backlogs of all sorts whether it's veterans waiting for benefits and people trying to get social security payments and backlogs through the better use of technology. they are being cut. that's definitely a good thing.

>> that's the good stuff. a list of four good things. on the oops list, huh something like nine. i will bring up one of them. you are saying that when it comes to the landfill, the issue of troops remains being found in a landfill, that was a big no-no.

>> this was the big issue at the mortuary scandal that happened between 2004 and 2008 . hundreds of remains of service members killed overseas were dumped in a landfill and body parts were misplaced as an awful story and an example of how they dropped the ball, keeping their share of the commitment that the troops make to the country.

>> also you heard response when is it came to the shutdowns. we are talking about the government shutdowns every other month.

>> about every six week and that meant that federal agencies had to be on watch to close down. they were not able to do the actual job. government is supposed to be function skpk several times they almost did it. that is a big oops of 2011 .

>> good and bad stuff for the government. thank you so much.

Nintendo, EA and Sony also rescind SOPA support

Nintendo, Electronic Arts and Sony Electronics have apparently followed the example of Microsoft and the Business Software Alliance, and have removed their corporate monikers from the list of supporters for the increasingly unpopular Stop Online Piracy Act. None of the three companies have commented on why they reversed their position on the controversial bill, but we imagine its because endorsing it makes the internet pretty angry with you. When asked, EA corporate told Joystiq this afternoon, "EA never expressed a position for or against SOPA." Sony and Nintendo had yet to respond as of publishing.

Note that not all of Sony's miscellaneous branches have rescinded their support, as Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Nashville still appear on the list. Also, the Entertainment Software Association is still shown as a supporter -- an organization which the aforementioned publishers (among others) belong to. Whether the group will remain on an endorsement list which exactly zero of its members appear on remains to be seen.

New Year Ushers in Bright New Era in Lighting, Says Alliance Consumers to Save Money and Energy with Expanded Lighting Options

New Year Ushers in Bright New Era in Lighting, Says Alliance Consumers to Save Money and Energy with Expanded Lighting Options Posted By Betsy Kraat

WASHINGTON, DC--As we usher in a New Year, the first phase of a revolution in home lighting products ? one that promises a bright future at less cost ? will begin as well, says the Alliance to Save Energy.

Lighting likely accounts for 12% of home energy use, but the growing array of energy-efficient options allows consumers across the country to cut those expenses by $50 to more than $100 a year. Many of the new products are already on store shelves in anticipation of the federal standards that begin phasing in on January 1.

The 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush, established the new lighting standards that take effect over three years. In 2012 the law requires manufacturers to offer bulbs that are about 25% more energy efficient than traditional 100-watt incandescent bulbs. The law covers 75-watt bulbs in 2013 and 60- and 40-watt bulbs in 2014.

Lighting manufacturers are ready for the challenge, having been closely involved ? along with energy efficiency groups like the Alliance ? in developing the standards back in 2007. Their new products, including halogen incandescents, compact fluorescents (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), shed light in a range of colors from "warm white" to "cool blue," come in different shapes and sizes and offer different levels of savings.

Those manufacturers, as well as the Alliance and other advocates, are now working to dispel misunderstandings about the standards and to spread the word about the savings they offer.

"There has been some confusion about the impact of the new lighting standards," says Alliance President Kateri Callahan. "Consumers can still purchase incandescent bulbs with the brightness of a 100-watt bulb. The only difference is that those bulbs will be more efficient halogen incandescents that use about 30% less energy. Consumers are also able to choose CFLs and LEDs, which can save them 75% or more on their lighting energy costs. And, the more bulbs they replace with today's efficient ones, the more they will save."

The savings are considerable for the nation at large, too -- as much as $10 billion dollars a year and the amount of electricity generated by 30 large power plants ? about the same amount of electricity used by the state of Indiana every year.

"One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to make your home more energy efficient is by switching to energy-saving light bulbs. As consumers make the switch, we encourage them to look for new labeling and other information to help them make the best choices for their home," added Callahan.

The Alliance to Save Energy is a steering committee member of the LUMEN Coalition, a group of nonprofit organizations, manufacturers, utilities and others committed to educating consumers about their new lighting choices. The LUMENnow.org website can help consumers understand their new lighting options and shows them the results of a lighting makeover in a home.

Smart Guide to 2012: Billion-dollar price of privacy

Read more: "Smart Guide 2012: 10 ideas you'll want to understand"

If the rumours are to be believed, our personal data is worth around $100 billion. Facebook is expected to launch on the stock market in 2012 with an initial public offering that would value the social network at that price - and it is all thanks to you.

At that valuation each of Facebook's 800 million or so users is worth around $125. But why should it only be Facebook that can sell your personal details and "likes" to advertisers? Can't you broker a cut of their profits for yourself?

Unfortunately not. Your data is only worth something when it is part of a larger group. Knowing that you personally prefer ketchup to mustard is worthless to a firm, but the same information gathered from millions of people is highly valuable to McDonalds, for example.

Of course, if you decide to sell your private data off your own bat you need to know its value. One way to find out is differential privacy, a mathematical framework that equates the value of information to the harm caused by disclosing it. So the harm could be an increased chance of receiving marketing calls, being denied health insurance or just your friends thinking less of you.

But differential privacy only works when you know how your data will be handled, something social networks aren't transparent about. And so long as Facebook users are happy to give away their data for free, we will never be able to turn the true worth of our personal details into cold, hard cash.

Blast From The Past: Williamson, Wariner Blaze 4?400 Legs At NCAA?s

Home ? Sprints ? Blast From The Past: Williamson, Wariner Blaze 4?400 Legs At NCAA?s

Baylor teammates Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson were on top of the collegiate sprinting world in 2004. Wariner claimed the 400 meter title at the NCAA outdoor championships to go along with his indoor crown he won earlier that year while Williamson was sixth.

The two superstars joined forces on Baylor?s 4?400 meter relay on the final day of competition. Wariner took the baton for his third leg in seventh place and proceeded to run a stunning split of 43.9 seconds to move the Bears into the lead. Williamson then ran a solid 44.4 second anchor to hold off Mitch Potter of Minnesota to earn the win for Baylor.

Wariner went on to win the 400 meters at the Athens Olympics later that summer and again teamed up with Williamson to claim gold for the United States in the 4?400 relay.

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP

The VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP ($100 street) sounds like something that should be on the Hogwarts back-to-school recommended purchase list. But in reality (pun unavoidable), it's a portable scanner?one of the most portable available. If you need to scan on the go, and don't want to be weighted down with hardware, that alone makes it worth considering.

At 1.2 by 10.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and 0.4 pounds, you could argue that the PDS-ST415-VP is too big to call a magic wand. It certainly doesn't look as much like one as the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct 3.5 stars). However, both work essentially the same way for scanning. The sensor and rollers in both cases define the bottom. To scan, you start at the top of a page and sweep down, or start on the side and sweep across.

One other feature the two scanners share is that they don't need a computer to scan to. Instead they scan to memory and let you move the files to a computer later. Connect the PDS-ST415-VP by the supplied USB cable, and it will look like a USB drive to your computer so you can copy the files.

Setup and Scanning
There is not much to set up with this scanner. Just put in the two supplied AA batteries and insert a microSD or microSDHC card as memory to scan to. The only potential issue is that the scanner doesn't come with a memory card and there's no internal memory, so be sure you have one handy. According to the company, you can use cards with up to 32GB capacity.

Scanning is easy. The scanner offers one button to set it to color or black and white mode and another to set it to 300 or 600 pixels per inch (ppi). Simply choose your settings, and then scan. Just as important, there isn't much of a learning curve. I got acceptable scans starting with my first try, both for recognizing text, and for scanning photos well enough for, say, scanning an article and winding up with recognizable images in the photos.

Recognizing Text
In addition to setting up the hardware, you can optionally install Abbyy Screenshot Reader, which comes with the scanner and offers a limited ability to translate images of text into editable text. However, it's important to understand that Screenshot Reader is an OCR (optical character recognition) utility rather than a full-fledged OCR program.

The PDS-ST415-VP scans to JPG image file format. An OCR program would be able to recognize the text for at least one full file at a time. Screenshot Reader recognizes text showing on screen, and it can recognize only as much text as can fit on the screen.

Depending on your screen resolution, you may need to recognize a letter-size page of text in two or more pieces. In my tests using a 1,280 by 1024 screen resolution, for example, with the image zoomed in Photoshop to 33 percent and the text just fitting within the screen width, I had to recognize each page in three sections.

At smaller zoom sizes I could recognize more of the page, but the recognition accuracy dropped. At 33 percent zoom, the program read our Arial test page at font sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake and our Times New Roman test page at 12 points. At 12.5 percent, which is the largest zoom size that showed the full page at once, it couldn't read any font size without mistakes.

Other Issues
It's worth mention that although not needing a computer for scanning has the advantage of giving you less to carry with you, it has a disadvantage too. You can't see the scan and confirm that it's good enough to be usable until you connect to a computer, at which point you may no longer have the original handy to rescan. Depending on the situation, you may be better off skipping the scanner and taking a photo instead, so you can check the image quality on your camera or cameraphone's screen.

You can't count this too heavily against the PDS-ST415-VP, because it's pretty much standard today for portable scanners that don't need a computer, including, for example, the IRIScan anywhere 2 ($199, 3 stars) from I.R.I.S. and the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter PanScn06 ($149.99, 3 stars). One the few exceptions is the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199.99 direct, 4 stars), which lets you scan to a smartphone and see the results on the spot.

Despite this limitation, if you want to use a scanner rather than a camera, and you want one that's portable enough to carry with you virtually all the time, the PDS-ST415-VP is definitely in the running. When you compare prices with the alternatives, keep in mind that you'll need to buy a memory card and may want a more capable OCR program or a document management program as well. Even so, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP is a more than reasonable choice. It has little to no learning curve, it's easy to use, and its scan quality is up to the task.

Santorum to Iowa diners: 'We've got momentum'

(AP) ? Republican hopeful Rick Santorum is claiming momentum heading into the Iowa caucuses.

The former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania mingled with 25 people at a diner in Independence, Iowa, and touted his plan to give a tax break to businesses that move their operations back to the United States.

He has lagged in the polls but Santorum told diners Wednesday that things are going great and his campaign has momentum.

Santorum has been arguing that he's the most consistent conservative in the field. He's making that case in a new radio ad that began airing Wednesday and will run through next Tuesday's caucuses. The spot touts his hardline opposition to abortion and describes him as a "father of seven, a home-schooler and a devoted husband for 21 years."

Setelah Anelka, Klub China Kini Incar Drogba

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com?? Setelah Shanghai Shenhua menggaet Nicolas Anelka, klub rivalnya, Guangzhou Evergrande, berniat menggandeng penyerang Chelsea, Didier Drogba.

Washington State Major Parties Sue to Retain Elections for Party Committee Officers

On December 22, the Washington state Democratic and Republican Parties filed a lawsuit in state court, arguing that the state must provide elections in 2012 for Precinct Committee officers. The case will be heard on March 23, 2012, at 9 a.m., in Thurston County Superior Court in Olympia. The case is Washington State Democratic Central Committee v Washington Secretary of State.

Washington state election laws say these elections should be held for qualified parties. Only the Democratic and Republican Parties are ballot-qualified. The state had intended to hold these elections simultaneously with a March presidential primary, but then the state decided not to hold a presidential primary, and it canceled plans for elections for party office as well.

The state formerly held Precinct Committee Officer elections at the general election, but a U.S. District Court ruled last year that electing party officers in the general election violates freedom of association for those parties, because in effect the entire electorate, not just party members, were choosing party officers.

The other two states with top-two election systems, Louisiana and California, continue to hold elections for party officers. Louisiana and California use elections in which only party members can vote on party officers. It is easier for Louisiana and California to do this, than it is for Washington state, because Louisiana and California still hold presidential primaries simultaneously with the party officer elections.

Darlene Love and other traditions return to 'Letterman' (VIDEO)

Darlene Love,?the Lone Ranger, and meatball target practice have all become holiday traditions on?David Letterman's 'Late Show.'

Think holiday traditions and mistletoe, eggnog and caroling come to mind. David Letterman's Christmas includes target practice at a giant meatball, the Lone Ranger and singer?Darlene?Love.

Each has become part of CBS "Late Show" lore through the years, their appearances anticipated by fans like wrapped presents under a tree. The traditions return Friday.

Comic Jay Thomas will be back to try to knock a meatball off the top of a Christmas tree with a football and recount his Lone Ranger anecdote again.?Love?will sing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" as fake snow flutters to the stage.

"The best traditions are the ones you can't plan," said Rob Burnett, executive producer of "Late Show."

"These happened very organically on our show and it is very silly and very goofy. It makes sense with the sensibility of the 'Late Show' to be part of our tradition."

Letterman's on-set Christmas tree is frequently decorated with oddities, such as the meatball on top instead of a star, angel or bow.

It all started one night back in 1998 when New York Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde was a guest. He and Letterman picked up footballs and began tossing them at the tree, aiming for the meatball. Watching their failures impatiently from the wings was Thomas, former quarterback at tiny Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C.

Thomas had discussed trying the target practice with Letterman before the show, but no one told that to stage manager Biff Henderson. He blocked Thomas from going out onstage.

"I fake to the right and Biff goes to catch me and I run around him like a scramble," said Thomas, who picked up a football and threw with laserlike accuracy at the meatball, accomplishing in one throw what the NFL quarterback couldn't in several.

Testaverde has been forgotten, but Thomas is invited back each year to see if he can repeat his feat.

Around the same time ? Thomas isn't sure exactly when ? Letterman heard about a story Thomas told of his time as a radio DJ in the South when he and a friend had to give a ride to Clayton Moore, star of television's "Lone Ranger." We won't be spoilers; Letterman has called it the "best story I've ever heard."
